The Friendly Robotics RL850 RoboMower 21-Inch Automatic Cordless Electric Lawn Mower is a very interesting lawn mower. A robot mows the lawn for you while you watch TV, read the paper or just relax. The RoboMower is electric, making both quiet and environment friendly. What could be better! All you need to do is to put the robot on the lawn and press the start button. Too good to be true? Well yes, in theory that’s what the RL850 RoboMower will do. But unfortunately, in the real world the RoboMower is not completely perfect.
The Friendly Robotics RL850 cuts up to 10,800 square feet in a single charge. Since it is fully automatic and very quiet, it can also operate during night time. It uses a grass cycling process, meaning that it shreds the clippings before dispersing over the lawn. According to the manufacturer, these clippings quickly decompose and release valuable nutrients and water into the soil. This gives you a healthier lawn that requires less water. The RL850 RoboMower comes with a two-year warranty.
So what are the drawbacks? First, the RL850 RoboMower is not cheap. Before you can start using the RL850 RoboMower, you need to place a wire around the perimeter of your lawn. Fortunately, you only need to do this once. The wire supplied with the RL850 is only 500 feet and if you need more, you have to pay a lot for the official copper wire. Fortunately, standard 14 gauge copper wire will also do. You can buy this much cheaper from most hardware stores. The earlier versions of Robotics RoboMower had quite a few problems and poor batteries. But it looks like the newer RoboMowers are much better and the batteries more reliable. But you may still have to replace the batteries after a while. One thing to remember is that the grass cycling process does not work well on wet grass.
As mentioned earlier, this is not a budget solution but it will certainly attract attention from your neighbors. And once you have managed to set the wire, the RL850 RoboMower does a good job. It is an interesting solution, provided that the money is no big deal to you.

It is just about the end of my first summer spent watching Mo cut the grass in our zone 6 Pennsylvania yard. It is a delight not to be doing the work myself. If Mo misses a spot I do not care because I AM NOT MOWING. Yippee.
Yes, it takes time and perserverence to lay the wire. I make my own pegs from wire coat hangers and I use 14 gauge wire from Home Depot because the supplies from this maker are just too high priced. The blades will probably have to be replaced (too many stones were hit this year) and the battery still seems fine after one summer of mowing 1/3 acre every week.
I have learned to use Mo only in dry weather – comments made by other reviewers are true, he does make a mess in mud and the deck does indeed get clogged with wet grass. But so did my big old gas powered Toro, which I do not miss … You can read more Friendly Robotics RL850 RoboMower reviews here
